I've moved desks three times in four years. Each move taught me something about how physical space shapes creative work. This last move — to a corner of the living room with a much smaller desk — was the most instructive.
Constraint as Clarity
With less surface area, I have fewer places to put things. That sounds like a problem. It turned out to be the opposite. I stopped accumulating notebooks, sticky notes, and half-open sketchbooks. Now there's a laptop, a single notebook, and a glass of water. That's it.
When the only thing in front of me is the work, I focus on the work faster.
The Monitor Shift
Going from a 24-inch to a 32-inch monitor at the same resolution changed how I see layouts. I started noticing spacing inconsistencies I used to miss. The extra pixels made me a better designer, or at least a more accurate one.
The quality of your tools shapes the quality of your attention.
Next month: I'm trying a standing desk insert. I have low expectations, which is usually when I'm most pleasantly surprised.
